There is no good evidence that doing mathematics changes your personality. The research linking the two is correlational, and the direction it actually supports is the reverse: certain traits predict who performs well at maths, not the other way round.
That is a disappointing answer to an interesting question, so the rest of this article is about what the evidence does show, which turns out to be more useful than the thing people usually ask.
What the research actually measured
Studies in this area take a group of people, measure their personality with something like a Big Five questionnaire, measure their academic performance, and look at how the two move together.
Conscientiousness is the trait that shows up most consistently. In a meta-analysis of personality and academic performance, the partial correlation for conscientiousness was around 0.35, well ahead of the other four traits. [mammadov-2022-bigfive] For mathematics specifically the associations are smaller, and both openness and conscientiousness sit below prior knowledge and general cognitive ability as predictors.
Now notice what that design cannot tell you. Everyone was measured after years of schooling. Nobody was randomly assigned to do mathematics. So a correlation between conscientiousness and maths results is equally consistent with two stories, and the boring one is more plausible: people who plan ahead, revise and finish things do better at a subject where every week depends on the one before.
Whether education changes personality at all is unsettled. Longitudinal studies have produced mixed results, with some finding no meaningful change across years of study and others finding hints of movement. Against that background, the narrower claim that one subject reshapes character has essentially nothing behind it.

The right-hand column is the popular version of this question, and all three bars are low for the same reason: nobody has run the study that would establish them.
The transfer problem
The most common version of the belief is that mathematical training makes you more logical in general.
That is intuitive and mostly wrong, because skills tend to stay close to where they were learned. Broad transfer, meaning a skill trained in one domain improving reasoning across unrelated ones, is famously hard to demonstrate, which is the same reason brain-training claims collapse under scrutiny.
Put concretely: someone can be excellent at proofs and reason exactly as badly as anyone else about whether to leave a job, or about an argument with their partner. Those are not the domain the skill was built in, and being good at one says surprisingly little about the other.
What maths does reliably affect
Here is the part with real evidence behind it, and it is not personality. It is anxiety.
Maths anxiety is a specific tension and fear that arises around mathematics, distinct from general anxiety. A meta-analysis of 223 studies found a small but reliable negative correlation of about -0.29 between maths anxiety and maths achievement. [barroso-2021-math-anxiety]
The mechanism is worth understanding because it explains why the feeling is so convincing. Anxiety occupies working memory, and arithmetic runs on working memory. So the anxiety does not merely accompany poor performance, it produces some of it, which then confirms the belief that produced the anxiety.
That loop is why people carry a maths identity around for decades on the strength of a few lessons.
The belief that actually gets built
So the honest answer to the original question is that maths does not change your personality, and it frequently does change one specific belief about yourself.
I am not a maths person.
That sentence is doing something quite particular. It is not a report of a difficulty, it is a claim about the kind of person you are, and it is usually assembled from a small number of vivid experiences: a teacher, a test, a moment of being asked something in front of a class. A handful of events becomes a permanent category.

The second item is the most revealing one. A conclusion about your nature that traces back to a single identifiable moment is a belief formed under pressure, not a measurement. It is worth treating as a prediction you could test rather than a fact you already have.
Plenty of people find maths uncomfortable without building an identity around it. The distinguishing question is whether you avoid things because of it, since avoidance is what stops the belief ever being tested.

If you want to change it
Not by being told you are capable, which never works and is usually the first thing people try.
- Test the prediction rather than the trait. “I will find this hard” is checkable in an evening. “I am not a maths person” is not checkable at all, which is exactly what makes it durable.
- Expect difficulty to feel like failure. In a cumulative subject, being stuck is the ordinary condition rather than the diagnostic sign. People who continue are not the ones who found it easy.
- Do small amounts often. Anxiety falls with familiarity, and familiarity is a function of frequency rather than duration.
- Watch what you say out loud. “I am terrible at maths” told as a joke is still a claim you are rehearsing, and other people then reflect it back.
- Separate the feeling from the evidence. Dread before a number problem is a conditioned response to old experiences, not a readout of current ability.
When to seek help
Nothing about disliking mathematics needs a doctor. It is worth raising with someone if avoidance is shaping decisions that matter, such as declining work, courses or promotions, or if the belief that you are incapable has spread well beyond maths into a general view of yourself.
