Dyscalculia is a specific, lasting difficulty with number that sits apart from a person’s general intelligence. It is not a bigger version of finding long division annoying; it is a persistent gap between how someone reasons about everything else and how they cope with quantity, one that does not close with the teaching and practice that works for the people sitting next to them.
What is dyscalculia?
Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder affecting mathematics, in the same family as dyslexia but built on a different foundation. Where dyslexia is rooted in a difficulty connecting sounds to letters, dyscalculia is usually rooted in weak number sense, the intuitive feel for quantity that lets most people glance at two piles of coins and know which is bigger without counting.
Butterworth and colleagues describe this as a core deficit rather than a gap in memorised facts, which matters because it reframes what the difficulty actually is. [butterworth-2011-dyscalculia] A person with dyscalculia is not failing to remember that 7 times 8 is 56; they are working from a shakier sense of what 56 even represents, so the fact never gets the stable foundation it needs to stick.
How dyscalculia differs from just being bad at maths
Ordinary difficulty with maths is common, uneven, and it responds to teaching. Dyscalculia is a different shape of problem: a difficulty that persists despite good instruction, sits well below everything else a person can do, and has been present for a long stretch of time rather than showing up after one hard topic.
A useful test is the mismatch. Somebody who reasons clearly, holds a demanding job, and manages complex verbal information, yet still counts on their fingers for single-digit sums or cannot tell at a glance whether they have been given the right change, is showing the pattern dyscalculia describes. Somebody who finds algebra genuinely confusing but keeps pace with arithmetic and everyday number use is more likely showing ordinary difficulty than a learning disorder.
Where the difficulty commonly shows up
Dyscalculia is not one uniform blank spot. It tends to cluster in a few recognisable areas, and which ones are affected, and how badly, varies from person to person.

Number sense is the foundation: judging which of two quantities is larger, subitising a small group without counting it one by one, and placing a number roughly on a mental number line. Calculation covers recalling basic facts and carrying out arithmetic procedures reliably. Word problems demand translating language into the right operation, which is where a strong reader with dyscalculia often stumbles despite following the story perfectly. Time and money are the everyday casualties: reading an analogue clock, working out change, or estimating how long a task will take, all of which lean on the same underlying number sense.
What dyscalculia looks like in children and adults
In children, the pattern often includes counting on fingers well past the age classmates have stopped, persistent difficulty learning number facts despite heavy repetition, confusion over basic symbols like plus and minus, and a strong dislike of anything involving numbers that looks like avoidance but is closer to exhaustion.
In adults, the same underlying pattern shows up differently. A person might avoid roles involving budgets or spreadsheets, feel a flash of panic when asked to work out a tip or split a bill, or have built elaborate workarounds, from photographing receipts to always paying by card, specifically to avoid mental arithmetic in front of other people. Many adults with dyscalculia describe having been called careless throughout school, when the actual pattern was consistent rather than careless: the same kinds of errors, in the same situations, for years.
How dyscalculia is diagnosed
There is no single test that confirms dyscalculia on its own. An assessment builds a profile: accuracy and speed with number facts and calculation, mathematical reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and a full developmental and educational history, usually carried out by an educational psychologist or another qualified specialist assessor.
Haberstroh and Schulte-Körne’s clinical practice guideline sets out that diagnosis should rest on below-average mathematical performance considered together with that wider history, testing, and clinical judgement, rather than on any single score. [haberstroh-2019-guideline] The same guideline notes that dyscalculia carries a substantially raised likelihood of co-occurring with dyslexia, which is one reason an assessment for either condition often screens for both.
What support actually helps
The teaching that helps is explicit and concrete before it is abstract. Building an intuitive sense of quantity, using physical objects, number lines, and visual groupings, has to come before drilling times tables, because facts that are not anchored to a real sense of quantity tend not to stick no matter how many times they are repeated.
Accommodations sit alongside that teaching rather than replacing it: extra time in exams, permitted calculator use where arithmetic itself is not the skill being tested, and formula or reference sheets for multi-step problems. None of these teach number sense, so a person given accommodations with no explicit instruction is being helped to work around a skill nobody has helped them build.

Ask for an assessment if difficulty with number stands out clearly against everything else a person can do, if progress with maths has stalled despite teaching that works for other learners, or if an adult is structuring their work or daily life specifically to avoid arithmetic. Speak to a doctor if the difficulty travels with persistent anxiety, low mood, or avoidance that is shaping daily decisions, because those are treatable in their own right and do not have to wait for the underlying number difficulty to improve.
