The three types, and how they differ

There is one diagnosis with three specifiers, not three separate conditions, and they co-occur often enough that finding one is a reason to look for the others.

Written expression is not messy handwriting, though the two are often conflated and the word dysgraphia gets used for both. The difficulty is in producing written language: spelling that does not stabilise, sentences that lose their grammar between the thought and the page, and paragraphs whose order makes sense to nobody but the writer. Mathematics is the one most people have never heard of. Butterworth and colleagues describe dyscalculia as a deficit in the basic sense of quantity rather than a failure to memorise, which reframes what help looks like: more drilling of times tables is more of the thing that is not working. How they are identified, and what changed

Assessment builds a profile rather than running one test: accuracy and speed in the affected skill, phonological processing, working memory, processing speed, reasoning, and a developmental and educational history.

What changed is the threshold. Older criteria required a discrepancy between measured intelligence and academic achievement, and that rule did two kinds of damage. It excluded children whose measured ability was not high enough to open a gap, and it delayed everybody else, because a young child has to fail for a sustained period before the discrepancy becomes statistically visible. Moll and colleagues found these difficulties are common enough that most classrooms contain several, and that the sex ratio is far more even than referral patterns suggest. What helps, and what only looks like it helps

The teaching that works has the same shape whichever skill is affected: explicit rather than discovery-based, sequenced from simple to complex, cumulative so nothing is assumed to have stuck, and repeated to the point of automaticity rather than the point of correctness.

For maths specifically, that means building quantity and number relationships concretely before moving to symbols. Drilling arithmetic facts harder is the intuitive response and it is the one Butterworth’s account predicts will fail, because the facts are not sticking for want of repetition. Accommodations belong alongside instruction and not in place of it. Extra time, speech-to-text and text-to-speech software, calculators where the skill being assessed is not arithmetic, and marking that separates spelling from ideas all remove a barrier. None of them teaches anything, and a person given accommodations without instruction is being helped to work around a skill nobody is helping them build.

The part that outlasts the difficulty

The academic difficulty is workable. What tends to persist is what the years before identification taught a person about themselves.

A child who works considerably harder than everyone around them and produces worse results draws the obvious conclusion, and it is the wrong one. That is why identification helps even when it arrives decades late, and why adults so often describe the explanation as more valuable than any accommodation that came with it. When to seek help

Ask for an assessment if one academic skill is persistently far below what the rest of a person can do, if progress has stalled despite teaching that works for other children, or if an adult is limiting their work or study to avoid reading, writing or numbers. Speak to a doctor if the difficulty travels with low mood, persistent anxiety or avoidance that is shaping daily life, because those are treatable in their own right and do not wait for the academic skill to improve.

What is dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is a specific difficulty with number. The core problem is usually number sense itself, meaning an intuitive grasp of quantity and of how numbers relate to each other, which is why counting on fingers persists long past the age it usually stops and why arithmetic facts refuse to become automatic no matter how many times they are practised. It affects roughly as many people as reading difficulty does and receives a small fraction of the recognition, so a child struggling with maths is far more likely to be told they are careless or not trying than to be assessed.

Does a learning disorder mean low intelligence?

No, and the diagnostic criteria were changed specifically to stop that inference. Older definitions required a discrepancy between measured intelligence and academic achievement, which produced two problems: it excluded children whose scores were low across the board and it delayed identification, because a young child has to fail for long enough to open a measurable gap. Current criteria rest on the difficulty persisting despite targeted, high-quality instruction.
