Is Dyslexia a Superpower? What the Evidence Shows

The claim that dyslexia comes with a built-in creative or spatial gift is repeated often enough that it functions as common knowledge. It is built mostly on one influential, genuinely real, and comparatively small finding. When a much larger body of evidence tested the same question, it found something more complicated, and more honest, than a superpower.

Where the “superpower” claim comes from

A 2003 study tested a specific ability: how quickly people identified “impossible figures,” a visual-spatial task requiring holistic rather than piece-by-piece processing. [karolyi-2003-talent] People with dyslexia in the study performed this task faster than people without it, and the researchers proposed that dyslexia might come with a genuine advantage in this particular kind of global visual-spatial processing.

That is a real result from real research, not a myth invented from nothing. It is also one study, on one specific task, and it is the finding that popular accounts of “the dyslexic advantage” tend to generalise into a much broader claim than the study itself makes.

What a much bigger analysis found

A 2018 meta-analysis combined data across many studies: 909 people without dyslexia and 956 people with it, far more than any single study behind the original claim. [chamberlain-2018-meta] Rather than confirming a consistent advantage, it found the population average for visual-spatial ability was lower in the dyslexia group, alongside substantially higher variance, meaning far more spread between individuals.

Those two findings are not a contradiction once the shapes are separated. A lower average with a wider spread means more people scoring below average, and also more people scoring well above it, than in a tighter, higher-scoring comparison group. The “some individuals genuinely have this talent” part of the popular claim is consistent with the data. The “dyslexia generally comes with this talent” part is not.

Why both studies can be right

This is worth sitting with because it explains why the debate keeps recurring rather than resolving. A single smaller study is more likely to land on a strikingly talented sample purely by chance, especially when the underlying population has genuinely high variance, which the larger meta-analysis later confirmed it does. That does not make the earlier finding false. It makes it a real result from one slice of a much more varied picture, generalised further than the data supported.

The corrective is not “the 2003 finding was wrong.” It is “the 2003 finding was a real result about a task on which dyslexia’s known variability happened to produce fast performers, and that is a narrower, more interesting claim than a superpower.”

What this does not establish

The meta-analysis measured visual-spatial ability broadly, not creativity as such, and popular claims about a “dyslexic advantage” often blur the two. Creativity is measured differently across studies and has its own separate, similarly mixed literature, which this article has not covered.

Neither study, on its own or together, says anything about any specific individual. A population-level average and its spread cannot tell you what one particular person’s strengths are; only assessing that person can.

What actually helps

Praise specific strengths, not a diagnosis-shaped story. “You’re really good at reading a room” is accurate and useful. “You’re good at that because of your dyslexia” attaches a causal story the evidence does not reliably support.

Do not treat the absence of a special talent as a problem. The larger evidence base says most people with dyslexia do not show a measurable visual-spatial advantage. That is the ordinary outcome, not a sign anything has gone wrong.

Keep support focused on what dyslexia actually affects. Reading, spelling, and the mapping between letters and sounds are where the evidence is consistent and the interventions are established. That is where support is most reliably useful.

Let genuine strengths be genuine, wherever they come from. A real talent does not need a origin story about dyslexia to be worth developing; it needs to be noticed and supported on its own terms.

When to seek help

Speak to a doctor, an educational psychologist, or a specialist assessor if you suspect dyslexia in yourself or a child and want a proper evaluation. If low mood, anxiety, or a sense of failure has developed around reading difficulties, or around comparisons to a “dyslexic superpower” that has not shown up, that is also worth raising directly rather than treating as a separate issue.

Does dyslexia affect intelligence?

No. Dyslexia is specifically a difficulty with the connection between written letters and the sounds of language, and it occurs across the full range of general intelligence. It is diagnosed by that specific pattern, not by an IQ score, and neither the presence nor the absence of a compensatory talent changes that underlying definition. The superpower narrative and the outdated assumption that dyslexia reflects low intelligence are opposite errors that share the same mistake: both attach a trait to the diagnosis that the diagnosis itself does not specify.

Should a child with dyslexia be encouraged to find their hidden talent?

Encouraging any child to find what they are good at is worthwhile on its own terms and does not need dyslexia research to justify it. What is worth being careful about is presenting a specific gift as something dyslexia is owed to them, since the evidence for a reliable link is weaker and more mixed than the popular version suggests. A child who does not experience a special visual-spatial talent has not failed to have dyslexia correctly; they are simply one of the many people the research already shows this link does not apply to.
