Texas verifies every therapy licence in one place, which sounds like a small administrative detail and is the single thing that makes checking a Houston therapist easier than checking one in most other states.
Everything else about finding therapy here is shaped by a different fact: Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country. That changes which routes actually matter, and most guides written for a national audience skip the ones that do.
One council, four professions
The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council oversees the boards that license psychologists, licensed professional counsellors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, and it runs a single public lookup covering all of them. [tx-bhec]
That is genuinely unusual. In Nevada the same job takes three separate boards and you have to know which letters you are dealing with before you can start; our guide to finding a therapist in Las Vegas sets out that split. Here you search the name once.
Do it before the first appointment rather than after. It takes about a minute, it confirms the licence is current rather than lapsed, and the same record shows disciplinary history.
| Letters you will see | What they are | Typical training |
|---|---|---|
| PhD, PsyD | Licensed psychologist | Doctorate, plus supervised hours |
| LPC | Licensed professional counsellor | Master’s, plus supervised hours |
| LCSW | Licensed clinical social worker | Master’s in social work, plus supervised hours |
| LMFT | Licensed marriage and family therapist | Master’s, relational focus |
None of these is ranked above the others for ordinary therapy. The differences that predict outcome are the specific approach the person uses and whether you can work with them, not the length of the training that produced the letters.
What it costs, and the routes that cost less
Private sessions in Houston commonly run from about 100 to 200 dollars. That is below New York and coastal California, and above what the same hour costs in a smaller Texas city.
Four routes cost less, in rough order of how much less:
- University training clinics. Supervised doctoral students, sliding scale set by income. Usually the cheapest structured therapy available, and the supervision is real rather than nominal.
- The county public mental health authority. Funded to serve people regardless of ability to pay, with fees set by income.
- Federally qualified health centres. Behavioural health on an income-based scale, often in the same building as primary care.
- Group therapy. Commonly a third to a half of the individual rate, and for several conditions the evidence is comparable to individual work.
The fifth route is the one people do not think to ask for: many private practices hold a small number of reduced-fee slots that appear nowhere on their website. Asking directly costs nothing and works often enough to be worth doing every time.

County public mental health authority
The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD
The public mental health authority for Harris County, funded to serve residents regardless of ability to pay, with fees set on a sliding scale. It runs community service centres across the county as well as this central site. This is the route most guides to private therapy leave out, and in a state with this many uninsured residents it is often the realistic one.

Official licence verification
Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council
The single public lookup for psychologists, licensed professional counsellors, social workers and marriage and family therapists in Texas. Search a name before the first appointment: it confirms the licence is current and shows any disciplinary history. Verification is free; the paid service is for formal written verification between states, which you do not need as a client.
Addresses checked on 25 August 2026. Listing a service here is not a recommendation of it, and MyFreud has no connection to any of them. Practices move, change what they offer, and close. Check the current details, and check that whoever you see holds a current licence in Houston, using the licence lookup above.
The compact widens your options
Texas participates in PSYPACT, the interstate compact for psychology, enacted in 2019 and effective from July 2020. [psypact-states]
In practice that means a psychologist licensed in another participating state can work with you by video without holding a separate Texas licence. It matters most when you want a specialism that is thin on the ground locally, and it is worth knowing about because most directories still filter by state as though the compact did not exist.
The general rule underneath it has not changed: the clinician usually has to be licensed where you are physically sitting during the session, not where they are. Counsellors and social workers have their own compacts at earlier stages of adoption, so with those professions ask rather than assume.
Say the constraint in your first message
The single change that most shortens this process is treating the first contact as a filter rather than a decision.
Contact eight to ten people in one sitting. Say what you want help with in a sentence, say what your insurance or self-pay situation is, and say when you can actually attend. Houston is a city where a great many people work shifts, drive an hour each way, or cannot take a weekday afternoon, and a practice with no evening slots is better discovered in an email than at booking.
Most of the delay in finding a therapist is not indecision. It is waiting on replies from people who never had capacity, one at a time.
What to do next
Check the licence, ask about the sliding scale, and contact more people than feels reasonable. Those three things account for most of the difference between finding someone in a fortnight and giving up after a month.
If you are not sure what you are looking for help with yet, our guide to what happens in a first therapy session covers what the first hour is actually for, and the self-assessment tools here give you a number to bring rather than an impression. There is more on choosing between the professions in psychiatrist versus psychologist, and the wider process is set out in our guide to finding a therapist.
